THE USDF GUIDE TO DRESSAGE, by Jennifer O'Bryant. 352 pages, hardcover, Storey Publishing (storey.com), 2006, $35.00. Everything a new dressage enthusiast has ever wanted to know about dressage can be found here. A bold statement? Maybe, but The USDF Guide to Dressage has 22 dense chapters filled with useful information, plus appendices. Written by the editor of USDF Connection, this book is the only complete manual endorsed by the USDF Designed for the dressage lover, the book begins with the history of dressage, then moves on to topics such as outfitting you and your horse (with an extensive section on tack), great suggestions for finding an instructor (for example, watch them give a clinic), basic riding position, preparing for the first show, the levels defined, and even a separate chapter for each gait. To put it simply, if you read it all at once, your brain might explode. A bit of wit makes the book an enjoyable read, with headings such as "Going for Baroque" and "You Can Have Any Color You Want, As Long As It's Black." BOTTOM LINE: This is the mother of all dressage primers.
