Blue Ridge Turquoise (Crescent Valley, northern Nevada) Also called the Orvil Jack Mine after the miner who discovered and developed the mine. At first Jack mined only for bright blue turquoise and discarded the green stones. Now the yellow-green turquoise (which results from he zinc content) is quite rare and consequently very collectible. Cabochon. A cabochon is a gemstone that has been smoothly shaped and polished as opposed to being cut with flat facets. This usually results in a stone with a rounded convex top and flat bottom. Opaque gems, such as turquoise are often cut as cabochons, while transparent stones such as diamonds are facetted. | ||||||||||||||||||
