Shalako refers to ceremonial dances conducted at the Winter Solstice, typically following harvest by the Zuni tribe. The purpose of the dances (usually held at the end of November or early December) is to give thanks for the harvest and bless homes.

Although many Zuni ceremonies are not open to outsides, the Shalako has been, which gave rise to the word being used in a generic sense for Native American mysticism.
