Hand made Native American Indian bird Fetish

The medicine bundle on top is made of shell heishi, turquoise nuggets and branch coral, all tied with sinew. Beneath the bird is a Mother of Pearl arrowhead. Eyes are inlaid turquoise.

Paula says - "Lena Boone's birds are unique and very old style. This stone comes alive with sparkles of silver fleks when the light catches it - the magic sparkles eluded my camera but trust me, they are special!"

What is a Fetish?

A fetish is a rock carving of an animal that captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Read more about fetishes.

Medicine Bundle - Many fetishes have a medicine bundle, offering bundle, or adornment tied on the back of the animal that consists of coral seed beads, shell heishi, feathers and other stone pieces. The bundle may be used as an offering to the fetish, to evoke the spirit of the fetish or to increase the strength of a fetish.

Sodalite is a light, relatively hard yet fragile mineral that is named after its sodium content. Well known for its blue color, sodalite may also be grey, yellow, green, or pink and is often mottled with white veins or patches. The more uniformly blue material is used in jewelry, where it is fashioned into cabochons and beads. That with more veining, patches and mottling is used in carving for interest.
