In Zuni Fetishes and Carvings by Kent McManis, a very similar turtle by Amos Pooacha is picture on page 26. McManis says that frogs and turtles are some of the oldest and most commonly carved Zuni fetishes. "Turtles have a rain association in addition to serving as links to the Zuni ancestors."
Frog and turtles have appeared in carved jewelry since prehistoric times. Considered the major rain-bringing fetish, the frog is also associated with abundance and fertility. |
