Justin Red Elk is the grandson of the late Zuni artist Leonard Halate. Justin's late father, Foster Red Elk, was a Sioux. Justin's mother, Pansy Natachu is a Zuni carver. Justin's carvings have great expression and he is known for his double otters and turtles. His work is greatly influenced by the whimsical feel and almost folk-art quality of his grandfather's (Leonard Halate) pieces, yet Justin's work and that of his renowned uncle Herbert Halate are sleeker and more rounded.
