If you've never owned one of these, you might not know how they are made.

For this style of barrette, a sleeve is made out of leather to custom fit the barrette. Then the top face of the sleeve is beaded and slipped over the barrette.

This is very nice for several reasons. The beads are securely attached to the leather. And the bottom side of the leather sleeve provides a wonderful grip against your hair so the barrette doesn't slip.

We purchased a group of jewelry from Shawnee artist, Little Feather.
The items are all vintage, mostly Navajo and Zuni and were from her personal collection.
