Paula says: "This is one of the most beautiful fetish necklaces I have seen. Sheep are an important part of the southwest Native American culture (see box below). This 3 strand necklace has beautiful fine turquoise heishi, 75 sheep, and handmade sterling silver cones and clasp. The sheep are hand carved from white spiny oyster shell that has glimpses of light orange here and there - it polishes up to glisten almost like mother of pearl - just beautiful."

"Are you wondering why this item is not described as Native American? You can find the answer by clicking here."

Churro Sheep

Hand made Native American Indian sheep fetish carving"Native Americans were first introduced to Churra sheep brought to North America by colonizing Spaniards in the 1500s. The Navajo and Zuni proved to be very good herders and weavers and Churro sheep became a main source of their negotiable wealth. Sheep images in Native American art represent charity, patience, gentleness and riches."

Why isn't this item called Native American?

The US Department of the Interior Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 and its recent Amendments require that items described as Native American or Indian be made by an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. Furthermore, government regulations suggest that all attributions include the Native American Indian's name, tribe and federal tribal enrollment number. Because it is impossible to identify the artist for many vintage items, even if they are authentic Indian made items, we cannot and will not use the words Native American or Indian in association with such pieces.
