Paula says - "The sterling silver shell of this turtle has cutout corn and feather designs. The layer under the shell is oxidized to make it black. There is a space between the layers to give a shadowbox effect. A turquoise stone set in a serrated bezel adds a finishing touch. Fine work by a renowned Navajo silversmith.

"This item can be worn as a pin or as a pendant.

"Want your jewelry to look like new? Read my blog 'To Polish or Not to Polish'. If you would like me to polish this pendant before we ship it then put a note in the note section of the order page."

Fancy Dancer Collection Navajo Jewelry CollectionThe Ration Collection

We were fortunate to obtain this and many other pieces from the estate of a collector who had a great appreciation for Benson and Benson Rations pieces.

Benson Ration was born in 1953 on the Canoncity Navajo reservation in New Mexico to Frances and John Ration. His brother Bennie was born in 1955. They are full blooded Navajo and come from a long line of silversmiths. Their father, John Ration, started teaching them the fundamentals of silversmithing in grade school. They helped their father who suggested that someday they might need to depend on silversmithing as their line of work.

After working with his father for a number of years, Benson developed his own style of kachina necklaces, pendants, bolo ties and earrings. Basing his three-dimensional figures on traditional kachina dancers, he uses a coping saw to cut the pieces from raw silver. He draws all of his designs on the metal freehand without using any stencils. He incorporates overlay in many of his pieces, often with corn and feather motifs.

Another unique aspect of his jewelry is that when you purchase a 3 piece necklace, for example, you have 3 pieces within the necklace that you can use separately if desired. Each component is designed to be used as a pendant and/or a pin.

Although the style of Benson's work is unmistakable, it does bear some similarity to the pieces of his brother, Bennie. Benson's hallmark is B. R. and a cloven hoof print.
