Paula says - "This rug was sent to us by one of the Native American artists who makes items for our store. Her mother purchased it in the 1960's and had it in her home in Arizona until this year. We are happy to help her find a new home for this vintage rug.

"This rug was made in one of the banded styles of weaving referred to as Crystal style. Note the cross pattern, soft earth tones and bands of wavy lines that are characteristic of Crystal rugs.
From the Crystal, New Mexico area. The Crystal style originated in the early 1900s at the Crystal Trading Post in the Chuska Mountains of New Mexico.

What is a lazy line?

Paula says - "One way to check the authenticity of a Navajo rug is to look for section lines, or as some call them, lazy lines. A section line appears as a diagonal joint in the weave where a weaver has stopped work on one section of the rug to work on different section. When the weaver resumes work and ties into an earlier section a 'lazy line' is formed. Not all Navajo rugs have section lines."

Hand Woven Navajo Rugs

Navajo rugs are a representation of the landscape and life in the southwest United States. Distinct styles emerged due to the fact that early weavers rarely saw the weavings of others, so individual styles developed in specific regions.

Traditional weavers, even today, raise their own sheep and wool and process the sheared wool themselves - washing, carding, dyeing and spinning. They either use the wool in its natural color or dye it with natural dyes. However, some weavers of the last 40-50 years have used commercially spun and dyed wool yarns.

Rugs are typically woven by sitting at a loom and weaving from the bottom upwards. Most rugs are woven using classic designs and techniques but new styles are evolving that utilize blends or variations of traditional styles.

A Navajo rug is like any other piece of art - if you like it, that is what matters.
