Paula says - "You may have heard of Ledger Art, where Indians used the materials at hand, such as old ledger paper from the forts and reservations, on which to paint and draw.. Well, this is Cigar Box Art, a creative repurposing of vintage cigar boxes by Lakota artist Alan Monroe.
"These authentic vintage cigar boxes were very well made with sturdy box joint corners. The insides of the lids retain the original art and markings of the cigar manufacturers. Monroe sands the boxes of rough edges but leaves deep scratches and other character marks the boxes have acquired over the years. He then burns and paints traditional Indian designs in the wood. Some boxes have a pipestone animal totem added to the lid. These are truly "treasure" boxes, functional pieces of Native American art that will give you many years (or generations) of service!"
