"Enrike Leekya is the great grandson of famous fetish carver Leekya Deyuse. When his children entered school, Leekya requested that they take his first name as their surname. All of his children (Alice, Sarah, Elizabeth, Robert, Francis, and Roger) did so.

"Leekya Deyuse had six children with wife Juanita Cooeyate, many of whom have become well-known jewelers and/or carvers. Sons Francis, Robert and Rodger and daughters Sarah and Alice achieved recognition, as have many of their own children, including Freddie Leekya, who is Francis's son and Delvin's father."

What is an Animal Fetish?

A fetish is a carving of an animal that captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Fetishes are carved from many types of stone, wood, antler, shell and other materials. Often the eyes and spots of adornment, called power spots, inset pieces of contrasting stones such as turquoise, jet and coral.

Badger Symbolism

Badger represents good work ethic, caution, healing and protection. Pueblo tribes associate Badger with the color red and the South guardian of the six directions.

What is Zuni Stone (Travertine, Zuni Rock)

A non-crystalline, porous rock found on the Zuni reservation. Travertine is a form of limestone (calcium carbonate) so in its pure form, it would be white, but most often travertine occurs in yellow, brown and gray hues due to the presence of other minerals. The late Zuni carver Leekya Deyuse was especially noted for carving with this stone and his descendents continue to use travertine in their carvings today.

Fetish Necklace

The use of small carved animals on Native American necklaces is a modern invention for the market. It is not traditional to use a fetish, per se, on a necklace or as jewelry.

Table fetishes stand on a flat surface for viewing. They come in various scales with the 2-inch scale being the size most commonly sold today.

Pocket Fetish

A fetish can be carried when the power of the animal is desired to help the person with a routine task or an obstacle or problem. Pocket fetishes might help with safe travel, a successful venture or "hunt", a good yield or "crop".
