What is heishi?

The word "Heishi" means shell in the Keresan language, which is spoken by Santo Domingo Indians. In the past heishi referred to pieces of shell that had been drilled and hand rolled or ground into bead shapes and strung as necklaces. Today it describes tiny handmade beads of any material, including turquoise and coral. Read more about heishi.

Santo Domingo Pueblo is a town (and a people, for the word "pueblo" can mean both) located about 25 miles south of Santa Fe, New Mexico near the original Cerrillos turquoise mines. The town's population of 2,500 is comprised mainly of Native Americans who speak a dialect of the Keresan Language. The jewelry of Santo Domingo is similar to that made by the Anasazi a thousand years ago and it is prized by collectors the world over.
