Paula says: " I examined this necklace closely and I've found that there are no two fetishes that are alike - even the foxes which are the most common in this necklace all have different tails, muzzles, ears. And the two turtles and the two frogs are very different from each other.

"This is a very pretty necklace made from stabilized turquoise with some nice matrix. It was hand made but we know it is not a Zuni necklace. It is possibly Navajo made but we just couldn't authenticate it being made by any particular Navajo carver so we are selling it simply as a very nice fetish necklace.

What is stabilized turquoise?

Often with fetish carvings and heishi necklaces the turquoise has been stabilized. This means that a natural turquoise nugget has been treated with a stabilizing agent that closes the pores of the stone so it will not change color or fracture. This allows the artist to carve fine details use smaller beads for necklaces; the stone would otherwise fracture if not stabilized. It also means your turquoise item will look just as bright and beautiful years from now as from the day you purchased it. Natural turquoise, although beautiful, can deteriorate over time, losing color and stability. Most turqoise used in Native American jewelry is stabilized for this reason. Read about turquoise here.

What is a Fetish?

Native American Jewelry and Fetish Carving BooksA fetish is a rock carving of an animal that captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Although carved from many types of rock, fishrock is traditional. Read more about fetishes.

Many fetishes have a medicine bundle or adornment tied on the back of the horse that often consists of coral seed beads, shell heishi, feathers and other stone pieces. The style and detail of carving varies among artists but usually includes detail on the face, ears, tail and mane. Often the eyes and other spots of adornment on the horse are inset pieces of contrasting stones such as turquoise, coral and others. Read more about stones.

Why isn't this item called Native American?

The US Department of the Interior Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 and its recent Amendments require that items described as Native American or Indian be made by an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. Furthermore, government regulations suggest that all attributions include the Native American Indian's name, tribe and federal tribal enrollment number. Because it is impossible to identify the artist for many vintage items, even if they are authentic Indian made items, we cannot and will not use the words Native American or Indian in association with such pieces.
