Robert and Bernice Leekya, Zuni

RLB is the hallmark of husband and wife team Robert and Bernice Leekya. Robert was born in 1934. He was taught the art of silversmithing by his father, the esteemed Leekya Deyuse (1889-1966) during the 1940s. Robert started working in his signature nugget style in 1953. He has won many awards for his cluster work using high quality nugget stones. Robert's mother was Juanita Cooyate.

Bernice Leekya, born in 1920, is the daughter of Zuni artists Doris Ondelacy and Wayne Ondelacy who taught her inlay and cluster work, her favorite designs being Knifewing and Rainbow Man.

Robert and Bernice Leekya have been making beautiful nugget watches, bolos, belt buckles and belts together since the 1960s. For a time they created inlay and gold set pieces, but when gold prices soared they returned to their preferred work – nugget-style using high quality Kingman stones and heavy sterling silver (18-26 gauge).

ABOUT TURQUOISE

is associated with the sky, and bringing sky energy to earth. It is known as a master healer stone as it is believed to help speed the healing process. It is also thought that turquoise can help promote honest and clear communication from the heart.
Turquoise comes in all shades of blue, to blue-green and it is the natural variations in turquoise that make it appealing. The color of turquoise in American Indian jewelry ranges from brownish green to bright blue. Found in veins sandwiched in between layers of mother rock, turquoise can show some of the influence of the mother rock in its matrix or veining. The matrix colors range from blue to golden brown to black and sometimes with golden flecks. Many people prefer turquoise with matrix over clear stones.

ABOUT KINGMAN TURQUOISE

Kingman turquoise comes from Mohave County, Arizona The Kingman Mine produces bright blue stones with white and black matrix. It is considered by many to have produced the best turquoise in North America. The terms "Kingman" and "high blue" refer to high quality hard turquoise like that of the Kingman mine. Old authentic natural Kingman turquoise is extremely rare.
