The Lakota are part of seven related Sioux tribes and speak Lakota, one of three major dialects of the Sioux language. Read about the Lakota People here.

SACRED RED CEDAR

Sacred Red Cedar is known by many indigenous people as the "Tree of Life", because it sustains the mind, body, and soul. The smoke of cedar burned as incense during prayer or ceremony carries prayers to the Creator. As with sweetgrass and sage, cedar is often burned in a ritual called "smudging" to drive out negative energies and to purify spaces and objects. The Lakota Sioux burn cedar leaves in ceremonies for Wakinyan, the Thunderbird.
