SACRED RED CEDARSacred Red Cedar is known by many indigenous people as the "Tree of Life", because it sustains the mind, body, and soul. The smoke of cedar burned as incense during prayer or ceremony carries prayers to the Creator. As with sweetgrass and sage, cedar is often burned in a ritual called "smudging" to drive out negative energies and to purify spaces and objects. The Lakota Sioux burn cedar leaves in ceremonies for Wakinyan, the Thunderbird. |
THE MORNING STARThe morning star is an important symbol to many Native Americans. It is the planet Venus, which appears as the brightest star in the eastern sky at dawn. It represents the direction from which spirits travel to earth and is a link between the living and the dead, thus symbolizing immortality. It symbolizes hope and guidance and is a sign of courage and purity of spirit. |
