What is Enamel?

Enamel used in jewelry is basically finely ground glass. When heated in a furnace to around 800 degrees Celsius the powdered glass liquifies to fill the spaces in the metal jewelry item. When it cools the result is a coloured glass coating.

"Talk about a unique buckle - I've never seen one like this before! It was "grandfather's buckle" from the collection of a middle aged woman, so is quite old, and unbelievably heavy for its size.

"The colors are of thick enamal with the top of the scene being dark green and the bottom a rich golden color. The enamal has worn off the horse and rider showing the copper and silver color of the base metal."
