Traditionally, Native American beads were traded by length - 20 inches of turquoise heishi or 18 inches of silver beads (Navajo Pearls). Some artists still sell their heishi and sterling silver bead necklaces that way. But the final length and fit of a necklace depends on how tightly the beads are strung, what type of clasp is used and how big the beads are.
