NOTE: Items in our Mexican Shop are either USED or NEW. They might come from inheritances, estate sales, private collections, and store liquidations. Many items are brand new (NOS, New Old Stock) and in perfect condition while others may show tarnish, scratches and other signs of use. Major issues will be described in detail and shown in photos. Mexican Shop items are sold as described and are not returnable.

About Mexican Silverwork

Although Mexican silversmiths (plateros) have been making items, including jewelry, out of silver for centuries, it was only after the Mexican Revolution in 1910-1920, that Mexican silverwork began to flourish. Because of government mandated hallmarks on silver pieces, most jewelry pieces that we see today can be dated to one of 3 periods:

        • 1900-1948
        • 1948-1980
        • 1980 and later.

Read about hallmarks on Mexican Silver Jewelry.

Southwest Native American Indians learned their craft from Mexican plateros. You can read more about that here: Where did Navajo silversmiths learn their craft?

Our Mexican Shop contains contemporary and new items, sometimes with materials, date and origin unknown. Most of the pieces have been previously owned but some are New Old Stock (NOS) that were never used. Many pieces have signs of wear and use such as darkened patina on silver and gold. Some may have damage. We will describe the condition of each item on its individual page.
