Umbilicus Balls Native American umbilical cord amulets, or umbilicus balls, traditionally hold the dried stump of a newborn's umbilical cord to offer protection, good luck, and spiritual grounding for the child as they grow. The balls are usually made in pairs, one containing the actual umbilical cord and a "dummy" or decoy amulet filled with stuffing in order to confuse evil spirits and protect the real amulet. The amulets are hung on the child's cradle board or above their bed and later given to them to keep as a personal protective charm. |
