Paula says - "You will see "STER AT" hallmark on a number of different rings in our store that are made by different artists. That's because the artists purchase cast sterling silver ring blanks from a Native American jewelry supply house. The ring blanks come with this hallmark. When we purchase rings, we try to find out who did the stone and silver work and indicate that on the page.

"In my opinion, this ring shows all the design characteristics and workmanship of being Native American made. But because there is no hallmark that we can attribute to a specific artist we can't legally sell it as Native American made - read more."

About the Royston Turquoise Mine

The Royston turquoise mine is in Nye County, Nevada. Discovered in 1902 it is the oldest patented mine in Nevada. Royston turquoise is known for its beautiful deep green to rich light blue colors. The stones are often two-tone, displaying both dark and light green and sometimes blue. The heavy matrix ranges from dark brown to gold in color. Royston turquoise is considered very collectible.

Why isn't this item called Native American?

The US Department of the Interior Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 and its recent Amendments require that items described as Native American or Indian be made by an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. Furthermore, government regulations suggest that all attributions include the Native American Indian's name, tribe and federal tribal enrollment number. Because it is impossible to identify the artist for many vintage items, even if they are authentic Indian made items, we cannot and will not use the words Native American or Indian in association with such pieces.
