WHAT IS AMBER?Amber is fossilized pine tree sap. Even though it is not a mineral, it is classified as a gemstone. Most of the world's amber is 30-90 million years old. Amber ranges from bright yellow to dark yellow or brownish-orange, depending on its age and where it is found; in rare cases it can be red or blue. Most amber is opaque because of exposure to sunlight, but it can be translucent to clear, sometimes with greenish to goldish inclusions. Amber can contain insects, small vertebrates and other particulate matter. Amber takes an electrical charge when rubbed and develops a pleasant resinous smell when it is burnt. Baltic amber comes from the area around the Baltic Sea, including Poland, Lithuania, Germany, and Latvia. Baltic amber contains succinic acid, which makes it useful for teething necklaces and bracelets and for pain relief when worn against the skin; also for flea prevention in pets. |
