About JadeThe term jade refers to two minerals composed of sodium, aluminum, and silica: jadeite and nephrite. Colors vary from green and white, to yellow, pink, purple, and black. Although similar in appearance - smooth with even texture - jadeite is much harder and has more intense color and translucency so is more highly valued. Nephrite, being not as hard, has been used more frequently for carving and for jewelry, mostly by mesoamerican cultures of Mexico and Guatemala, not southwestern U.S. tribes like the Navajo or Zuni. Jade is found primarily in Burma/Myanmar, and also in Guatemala, New Zealand, California, Mexico, and Central and South America. |
