What Is Alpaca Silver?Alpaca silver (also called nickel silver or German silver) is a traditional metal alloy made from copper, nickel, and zinc. Despite its name, it contains no actual silver, but it has a bright, silvery appearance that has made it popular in jewelry for over a century. Alpaca has been widely used in Mexican jewelry-making, especially in pieces created for the Southwestern and tourist markets. It is valued for its durability, affordability, and ability to hold detailed designs. Note: Alpaca jewelry is sometimes inspired by Native American designs but is a distinct category and should not be confused with authentic Navajo, Zuni, or Hopi sterling silver work. |
