What Is Alpaca Silver?Alpaca silver (also called nickel silver or German silver) is a traditional metal alloy made from copper, nickel, and zinc. Despite its name, it contains no actual silver, but it has a bright, silvery appearance that has made it popular in jewelry for over a century. Alpaca has been widely used in Mexican jewelry-making, especially in pieces created for the Southwestern and tourist markets. It is valued for its durability, affordability, and ability to hold detailed designs. Note: Alpaca jewelry is sometimes inspired by Native American designs but is a distinct category and should not be confused with authentic Navajo, Zuni, or Hopi sterling silver work. |
What Is Block Turquoise?Block turquoise (also called reconstituted turquoise) is a man-made material created by grinding small pieces of real turquoise and binding them together with resin and color agents. The mixture is then formed into solid blocks and cut into beads, cabochons, or inlay pieces. This process allows makers to produce turquoise in a wide range of colors, shapes, and consistent patterns, often at a lower cost than natural turquoise. Many block turquoise pieces are dyed to achieve bright blue or green shades. Block turquoise is frequently found in Southwestern-style and Mexican jewelry, especially in pieces made with Alpaca (nickel silver). It allows for bright, eye-catching designs and precise inlay work. Note: While block turquoise contains real turquoise, it is considered a composite material and is distinct from natural, untreated turquoise used in traditional Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi jewelry. |
