Is it Mother of Pearl or Abalone?

Abalone and mother of pearl are both nacre, the iridescent inner shell layer of various mollusks. Mother or pearl is the nacre of pearl oysters and freshwater mussels and has a milky white or silver appearance; it is also the substance that forms pearls. Abalone usually refers to the darker, more colorful nacre specifically from abalone shells.

What Is Alpaca Silver?

Alpaca silver (also called nickel silver or German silver) is a traditional metal alloy made from copper, nickel, and zinc. Despite its name, it contains no actual silver, but it has a bright, silvery appearance that has made it popular in jewelry for over a century.

Alpaca has been widely used in Mexican jewelry-making, especially in pieces created for the Southwestern and tourist markets. It is valued for its durability, affordability, and ability to hold detailed designs.

Note: Alpaca jewelry is sometimes inspired by Native American designs but is a distinct category and should not be confused with authentic Navajo, Zuni, or Hopi sterling silver work.
