What is an Animal Fetish?

A fetish is a carving of an animal that captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Fetishes are carved from many types of stone, wood, antler, shell and other materials. Often the eyes and spots of adornment, called power spots, inset pieces of contrasting stones such as turquoise, jet and coral.

About Suzette Lementino

Suzette Lementino (aka Suzette Calavaza Lementino) is a contemporary Zuni fetish carver from Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico. She belongs to the Lementino family, one of the well-known multi-generational Zuni carving families. She continues the Zuni cultural tradition of hand-carving stone fetishes (wemawe), which are believed to hold spiritual power and help connect the owner with the animal's qualities.

Suzette is particularly known for her charming and detailed carvings of raccoons. She works in a variety of stones, including: fish rock pipestone Picasso marble, jet, and black onyx. Her pieces frequently feature inlays of turquoise for eyes and accents, jet, and other stones for added detail and contrast. She signs her work with "SL" or her full name "Suzette Lementino" along with "Zuni." Her carvings are appreciated for their personality, fine detailing, and whimsical quality, making them popular with collectors. They appear regularly in galleries and online shops specializing in Zuni fetishes.

A fetish can be carried when the power of the animal is desired to help the person with a routine task or an obstacle or problem. Pocket fetishes might help with safe travel, a successful venture or "hunt", a good yield or "crop".
