What is an Animal Fetish?

A fetish is a carving of an animal that captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Fetishes are carved from many types of stone, wood, antler, shell and other materials. Often the eyes and spots of adornment, called power spots, inset pieces of contrasting stones such as turquoise, marble and coral.

Native American Owl Symbolism

Owl is a night bird with a large head and large eyes. Owl's eyes cannot move in their sockets but its head can rotate up to 270 degrees. With exceptional vision, acute hearing, silent flight, Owl is a stealthy and effective hunter. Native Americans attribute Owl with wisdom and sacred knowledge and call upon Owl medicine to help them see through deception, external appearances and illusion and to discover hidden truths. Plains Indians wear owl feathers to protect against evil spirits.

What is Antler?

Antler is a hornlike, bony growth, usually branched, that grows in pairs on the head of a deer, moose, elk, caribou, or other members of the deer family. Antlers occur on the heads of male deer and on some related species of either sex. Because of antler's rich brown colors and ease of carving, it is a preferred medium of many carvers. Antlers are a renewable resource, as they are shed each year and grow more branches each season as the animal ages.

Fetish Necklace

The use of small carved animals on Native American necklaces is a modern invention for the market. It is not traditional to use a fetish, per se, on a necklace or as jewelry.

Table Fetish

Table fetishes stand on a flat surface for viewing. They come in various scales with the 2-inch scale being the size most commonly sold today.

Pocket Fetish

A fetish can be carried when the power of the animal is desired to help the person with a routine task or an obstacle or problem. Pocket fetishes might help with safe travel, a successful venture or "hunt", a good yield or "crop".
